What else do you know that can compare to the magnificent colors you see when you look through your camera lens at a butterfly? Maybe a butterfly sitting on a beautiful brilliant flower. It doesn't get any prettier than that. If you're lucky enough to have a garden with flowers that attract these winged beauties, and you're into photography, hopefully, you've been getting some great shots. But, if that doesn't describe your situation, you may find some of these tips helpful in getting started.
There are three great environments for photographing butterflies. The outdoors, garden settings, and butterfly farms or houses. People have been collecting butterflies for centuries. Catching them, killing them and displaying them on boards and in cases. Catching them on film is a great alternative. The butterfly gets to live and the pictures live on.
You don't have to have a lot of special equipment or a big, expensive camera to begin your butterfly photography. Actually, you may be spending a lot of time getting up and down off the ground to get those great shots. The smaller point and shoot camera and the convenience of a quality fanny pack camera bag would be just perfect for butterfly photography. You'll also need a good helping of patience and a lot of time. You can't go out and call butterflies. You can, however, set yourself up to have the best possible opportunity to find butterflies to photograph.
Butterflies are attracted to colors and scents. If your desire is to photograph butterflies in their natural habitat, you might go out a day or so ahead of time to locate an area that has the right conditions for butterfly photography. A couple good places to look would be fields that are loaded with wildflowers or areas of damp or moist soil. If you live in an area that is lush with forests, rivers, streams, and waterfalls look in those areas for some perfect shots of these magnificent creatures.
If you have a garden filled with flowers of purple, lavender, white, yellow, orange, and red, you should be able to go out your back door, set up your tripod, and wait for the butterflies to appear. Some of the most popular flowers for butterflies are alyssum, dahlias, honeysuckle, impatients, marigolds, petunias, sunflowers, candytuft, and zinnias. You can also help encourage them to your garden by putting out some over ripe fruit or nectar. Butterflies are attracted to the scent of rotting fruit.
Check your background before you're start your photo shoot. Ideally, try to situate yourself so that the background compliments the butterfly. Do your best to frame the shot to eliminate unwanted background items. Get as close to the subject as you possibly can, without scaring it away, so that the butterfly fills the picture. Another way to deal with unwanted background images is to set your camera to blur the background. Butterflies are attracted to flowers that are in the sun rather than the shade, so be positioned properly when taking your shots.
Have your camera bag packed and ready the day before, so you can head out early in the morning. Have extra film or memory cards, extra batteries, and a tripod. As with most photography, the best time to photograph butterflies is either early in the morning or late in the evening. Not only is the lighting best, but the butterflies won't be quite as active during these times of the day when it's cooler. It will give you a little more time to take the shot when the butterfly comes into view. Take as many pictures of the butterfly as you can before it flies away. Don't wait for what you think may be the perfect shot or you may not get a picture at all.

Are you thinking of buying your first digital camera, but can't make sense of all the technical lingo and sales hype? Don't worry, your not alone. Fortunately, it's really not that difficult once things are explained simply and concisely. You don't need to understand complex camera technology, or be a computer geek to enjoy the benefits of owning a digital camera. You don't even need a computer. Let's try to simplify the whole process, and make some affordable and reliable recommendations for a beginners first digital camera.
If you've spent any time at all looking at or reading about digital cameras, you probably heard the term megapixel. Often abbreviated as "MP". In layman's terms, megapixels is simply an indicator of the amount of details that can be fit into your picture. Generally speaking, the more details the better your picture will look. Especially if you decide to have your pictures blown up to larger print sizes.
A few years ago, the more megapixels you could get in a camera the better. These days, technology has advanced so much, that even the cheapest digital cameras have plenty of megapixels. Usually at least 5MP. Anything over that is a bonus for the average photographer. The camera manufacturers continue to hype this feature, simply that's what consumers have learned to look for over the years. For the most part, you can just ignore it.
If you really want a better feature to compare, take a look at image sensor size. The image sensor is for digital cameras, what film was for film cameras. The biggest difference being, you don't have to replace it all the time. Generally, the larger image sensor the better. You may have to read through some manuals or ask a salesperson to determine the size. If they don't know, tell you it's not important, or can't find it, then it's time to move on to the next salesperson.
That's enough tech speak. How 'bout I make a few recommendations. The Canon PowerShot A570IS is a great beginner digital camera. It's been on a lot of top 10 lists lately, and continues to sell extremely well. For less than $150, you get 7MP, image stabilization, face recognition focusing, and the solid Canon name brand. For about twice the money you can get a Canon PowerShot Pro Series S5. You'll get everything the A570 offers plus better image quality, and a 12X optical zoom (great when your stuck at the back of the wedding church). For those of you that consider portability (read small size) important, you can't go wrong with the Canon PowerShot SD1000 Digital Elph. For a slight decrease in image quality, and an equally slight increase in price, you get a very portable and easy to use camera.
Finding the best beginner digital camera for you is not that tough. While you can read technical specifications, and talk to salespeople for hours at a time, there's no substitute for trying a camera out. Take a visit to your favorite camera store, and take a camera test drive. Take your time and don't let the sales staff rush you. Ask lots of questions, and take lots of pictures. Before you know it, you'll be taking pictures like a pro with your very own digital camera.
Touch. It's always been the heart of communication. Simply put your finger to the brilliant 3.5-inch wide PureColor System Touch Panel LCD screen, and the versatile excellence of the Canon PowerShot SD3500 IS Digital ELPH is at your command. Naturally, a camera this smart and intuitive knows a few things about style. Color gleams, while smooth curves reveal a definite edge. Touch the future!

Why is so difficult for camera companies to come up with one good all around digital camera that's perfect for all occasions? I suppose it's not really in their best interests to encourage consumers to only own one perfect camera, when they can sell them several. If I were more of a conspiracy theory advocate, I'd suggest they do it on purpose. But, I'm not, and I do believe there are other factors at work here. With all that being said, it doesn't mean we can at least try to find the most likely candidate for best all around digital camera.
The three most distinguishable features or dividing factors when it comes to digital cameras are size, ease of use, and image quality. To lesser and greater degrees, these traits seem to be mutually exclusive when it comes to camera design and build.
Smaller sized camera designs are very portable, but usually affect ease of use and image quality in negative ways. The smaller a camera is, the smaller the controls are, which makes them harder to use. Single control buttons and wheels are often used for multiple functions which can increase user confusion. Smaller cameras often mean, that features like viewfinders get left off in the effort to add bigger LCD screens. Smaller often means zoom lenses are less powerful, and overall lens quality suffers. The most successful small sized cameras I like are the Canon SD1000 Digital Elph, and the Olympus Stylus 790SW.
Ease of use usually means lots of auto settings, which is great for newbie photographers, as little skill is required to snap a picture. But, it also means camera designers are forced to compromise on default settings that are OK for most pictures, but not great for all pictures. Factory set defaults will have to do until cameras become smart enough to detect all the nuances of a particular shot regarding lighting, color, and artistic intention. The Canon Powershot A570IS is one of the better cameras in terms of simplifying things at a reasonable price.
The ultimate in image quality usually means big bulky SLR cameras with a case load of lenses and controlled lighting for different types of shooting environments. SLR photography also involves micro managing of all the various camera settings such as aperture, ISO settings, white balance, f-stop and so on. You really have to know what your doing. The Canon Rebel XTi Digital SLR, or the Nikon D40 are good cameras in this category that don't break the bank.
To build one camera that can do everything would be ideal, but were not there yet. I believe we will be at some point, but a number of technologies still need to make some considerable advances before that can happen. Lens technology and camera intelligence being the two main ones. Until then, the best all around digital camera will just have to be the one your holding right now. Like the song says, "Love the one your with".

The most important piece of equipment when it comes to taking good pictures has nothing to do with anything you can buy at a store. It's actually your own two eyes and your brain. Being able to see what you want to take a picture in your mind is the first step to taking a great picture. It really doesn't matter if you have a $100 camera, or a $10,000 camera. If you can't see and compose the desired image with your own eyes, in your mind, then save yourself a whack of money and buy the $100 camera.
I heard a great story from an aspiring young photographer about their college days. His professor in a photography class full of promising professional photographers was given a simple task. They were shown a dozen or so beautiful and artistic photographs. Their task was to determine which photographs were taken by some very expensive SLR cameras, and which were taken by some very inexpensive point and shoot cameras. The end result? Their success rate was about as good as if they had just randomly guessed.
The point I'm trying to make here, is not that you need to be the next Fran Lebowitz to take great photographs. What I am trying to say is, don't sweat over a bunch of technical specifications and marketing hyperbole while trying to decide on which digital camera is best for me. It doesn't really matter. What does matter, is that you make a decision, and start taking pictures. The more pictures you take, the better your next set of pictures will be.
With all that in mind, it would be unfair of me to not make at least a few digital camera recommendations. Especially considering the title of this piece. If your unsure of brand, I'd pick Canon. They have by far more models to choose from then any other manufacturer. If your looking for a really small camera, you can take anywhere, consider the Canon SD1000 Digital Elph. If image quality is more of a consideration then portability, then step up to the Canon PowerShot A570IS. Both are around the $150 range. If your a little more ambitious with your photography, then start with a Canon Digital Rebel XTi SLR camera. For under $600 you've got plenty of room to grow. That's it, go get one, and start taking pictures. Your not getting any younger.

There are many different models and types of digital cameras available just as there are lots of different styles and skill levels of photography. Which digital camera you choose will often depend on what your individual needs are. If you want near professional results and lots of creative control over the photos that you take, then a digital single lens reflex camera can be what you need. But for most people, the choice of a compact or subcompact digital camera would be just fine. Here are some guidelines for choosing digital cameras:
Compact digital cameras are the most popular and common of the camera types. It's still small enough to be very portable and is usually very easy to use with lots of automatic exposure features that produce great overall photos. Some can even have a few manual exposure controls too to help the photographer take charge of the image produced under certain circumstances.
The subcompact camera is even smaller than the compact and because of their small size can be put in a pocket or purse and taken almost anywhere, making them the most portable of all digital cameras. However, you also usually pay more for the smaller size, and will often have even less manual controls over exposure results than the compact cameras. You also have to be careful that the camera is not so small that it actually becomes hard to use.
The advanced digital camera is a step between the compact camera and a digital single lens reflex like that used by serious photography hobbyists and pros. It is larger in size and weight than the compacts and has a fixed lens, but also sports more advanced manual exposure controls and the ability to save in more and better file formats than just JPEG.
With that in mind, we have analyzed lots of independent reviews on digital cameras and have noticed a few models that seem to get universal acceptance and recommendation. Here are those models:
In the compact digital camera category the Fuji FinePix F10, the Canon PowerShot A510, the Kodak EasyShare Z700, and the Olympus Stylus 800 seem to consistently rank very well for their style, ease of use, price, and features. In the subcompact category the Kodak EasyShare V550, the Canon PowerShot SD500 Digital ELPH, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-L1, and the Pentax Optio SV were consistently rated at or near the top of most unbiased independant and consumer reviews.
It's also noteworthy to mention that many reviewers felt that the gap between the best and poorest performing models has narrowed considerably and most cameras that were tested produced acceptable snapshot results overall. But the models mentioned above were often regarded as the cream of the crop and so would make the smartest consumer choices as the best rated digital cameras.
Thad Pickering writes on many consumer related topics including digital photography. You can find the best rated digital cameras and buy digital camera online by visiting our Digital Photography website.
