The Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS is a great camera for beginners and pros alike. Although the experts still find SLRs more useful, the Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS still has some exciting new features.

Aside from the wide 2.5 LCD monitor, it also has a nice ISO range-from 80 to 1600. It has a 8 megapixel lens with 3x optical zoom, allowing you to have a range equivalent to a moderate telephoto and a moderate wide angle.

There are 13 scene modes which will be perfect for beginners to tweak, and it offers an exposure of as long as 15 seconds manually.

Pros and cons

The camera is easy to setup and easy to use, perfect for beginners and pros alike. It also has a quality construction and comfortable controls which also makes it easier for users to use it. The Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS is perfect for taking pictures on travel and during family events because of its easy grip, but it will also be sufficient enough for photojournalism, just tweak the settings a little bit.

But, like every gadget there is, the Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS also has its own set of flaws that are determined by other user. The downsides include its poor image quality when in low light, and the poor battery life. So when you use it, make sure you bring the charger along so you won't be disappointed too much. Zune Hits the Streets

Zune is upon us, and if you weren't aware of it you are among the few that the Microsoft marketing machine has missed. Run a Google search on the name, and the first six results listed are all websites - or more accurately, domain names - produced by Microsoft and containing their promotional material.

Zune is the Microsoft MP3 player, available on the market for just a few weeks now. It has a thirty gigabyte hard drive, a three inch square video LCD and costs two hundred and fifty bucks. There are a couple of features that the iPod doesn't have: the Zune has some "preloaded" music on it from contemporary artists; it also has wireless transfer capability so that one Zune can ship music or photos to another Zune over a short distance. Overall, however, it's fair to say that, in its current format, the Zune does not represent a significant improvement over the iPod, or a compelling reason to pick it up if you already have an iPod.

Microsoft would have you see it a little differently. They are casting the Zune player as the first in a series of products to be released under its Zune brand. "Designed around the principles of sharing, discovery and community, Zune will create new ways for consumers to connect and share entertainment experience...With Zune, we are not simply delivering a portable device, we are introducing a new platform that helps bring artists closer to their audiences and helps people find new music and develop new social connections."

Along with the media player the Microsoft Zune music store has sprung to life and at the same price as the iPod music mart - ninety nine cents per. Currently, they have two million tunes available compared to Apple's 3.2 million. Early Microsoft press releases hype song sales from labels "DTS, EMI Music's Astralwerks Records and Virgin Records, Ninja Tune, Playlouderecordings, Quango Music Group, Sub Pop Records, and V2/Artemis Records." Presumably some of that preloaded music comes from artists on these labels.

Much has been written about the recent deal signed by Microsoft and Universal Music Group. That agreement has Microsoft paying Universal $1 per Zune sold - and it is a landmark deal because it gives the music company a share in the sale of the hardware. Apparently Microsoft felt compelled to develop an inside arrangement with a major music company because of its late start in the business. For its part, Universal's CEO says, "We felt that any business that's built on the bedrock of music we should share in..."

Apple has no such arrangement in its contracts with recording companies; those are straight revenue sharing deals. There is a good deal of concern that this deal will presage a new degree of control by the music companies over hardware manufacturers, not to mention a fee structure.

According to Universal CEO Doug Morris: "We were very early in working with Steve (Jobs) on the launch of the iPod and he's been a very good partner and done a lot for the industry...We have a current contract with him and at the end of that I'm sure we'll negotiate." Morris' company accounts for nearly one in three CDs sold in the United States.

The notion behind this agreement is that music companies lose a lot of sales to digital piracy - through peer-to-peer sharing on the Internet and through simple transfer of music from one iPod to another. Indeed, one of the features on the Zune player is that any song transferred to it from another Zune will "expire" after three plays. That should pump up business for the Zune music store; however it also gives the Zune wireless feature a mercenary look.

This is why the people behind technology are making so much money! Maybe it's the commercials and advertising or marketing. Maybe it's the insane jealousy that we feel when we see someone who has something that we don't. Whatever it is, it seems like technology keeps moving forward- always one or two steps ahead of us, and we're just trying to play "catch-up" in order to keep up. Does anyone even stop to think anymore before they purchase an electronic item? Do they ever stop and ponder whether or not they truly need the iphone versus a regular cell phone versus just having a land line versus just using two cans connected with a string in the middle? I received this camera as a gift three years ago and it has served me well. It is easy to use and takes high quality pictures. It tends not to want to take the picture unless the image is in focus, which I love. And I have never experienced an E18 error. I also love the video feature and have captured some great moments on it (works better with a larger memory card).

My complaint is that it does take a long time to power on which can be annoying when youre trying to quickly snap a picture of something that is happening right at that moment.

As time has gone on, the power on has taken longer than it did in the beginning, and it takes a REALLY long time (10 seconds-ish) to switch back from play mode to snap mode. And sometimes it will just shut itself down when I go from play to snap mode, even with a full battery.

I am assuming that these faults have come with the aging of the camera and that my beloved first digital camera is slowly dying. It really has served me well for these 3 years but now it is starting to malfunction, and repairs are not cheap! (I dropped it while at the circus recently and the panoramic,b&w and video functions stopped working and I was told it would cost a minimum of 4 to fix it.)

Canon PowerShot SD780IS Review

The Canon PowerShot SD780IS was introduced to the US market early March 2009 and has many great features. It is the slimmest digital ELPH Canon has produced so far but its small body packs a real punch. The term 'ELPH', before you ask, is a combination of the word 'elf' (for a camera that is small and magical) and the word 'photograph.' Besides being memorable marketing, the use of a non-standard spelling of 'elf' makes it a defensible trademark.

The camera comes in four colors, black, silver, gold and deep red. It is a 12.1 MP digital camera with a 2.5 inch LCD and a 3x optical image stabilized zoom. As already stated it is the slimmest ELPH Canon has produced with a width of 0.7 inches. Combined with a width and height of just 3.4 and 2.1 inches and weighing in at 4.2 ounces, it really is small.

Looking briefly at some of the highlights of this camera we can see that it has: HD movie shooting capability and HDMI output. This lets you record video in beautiful high definition (1280 x 720 pixels). You can then enjoy your movie, and still pics as well, on your HDTV by using the mini-HDMI connector with no degradation of the image.

By setting the Canon Powershot SD780 IS to smart auto the camera automatically selects an appropriate setting from 18 specially defined settings. You just have to concentrate on shooting the picture, Canon technology will take care of the rest.

A Face Detection Self-Timer automatically detects an increase in the number of faces and makes the appropriate adjustments. So if you are taking a group photo and want to include the yourself, just put the camera on a tripod and select Face Detection Self Timer. The camera will now wait for the your face to move into the frame before it takes the perfectly focused shot.

This is possible because of the advanced DIGIC 4 image processor on board the camera. This delivers evolved Face Detection Technology that keeps every face in every photo looking its very best. The technology finds and tracks the faces of moving subjects until you're ready to shoot, then delivers perfect focus.

Ref eye correction is not new but the Canon Powershot SD780IS provides three options for removing red eye from your flash photographs. Firstly red eye is detected and corrected during shooting, secondly the camera can be set to automatically detect and correct red-eye during image playback. Finally you can manually locate any red eyes in a scene during image playback on the LCD screen, and command the camera to remove them.

Another piece of technology on board the PowerShot SD780IS is iSAPS. This is an original scene recognition technology developed for digital cameras by Canon. Using an internal database of thousands of different photos, iSAPS works with the advanced DIGIC 4 Image Processor to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance.

This camera has other great features apart from those touched on here. All in all Canon are doing their best with this camera to make it as easy as possible for you to take great photos and videos each and every time. It fits easily into a purse or shirt pocket ready to shoot video and capture images at a seconds notice.
