Canon PowerShot S230 3.2 MP Digital ELPH Camera with 2x Optical Zoom and Coach Camera Case Customer Review
I bought this camera almost 4 years ago, and I love it in every way. It takes great pictures, uses a rechargeable battery and is great on battery life. I go about 6 months without having to recharge the battery. I would say I take a medium amount of pictures.
Recently Dec. 2007, I went to go take a picture and the screen was blank with a few purplish lines running through it.. My icons showed up, but there wasn't anything in the LCD. When viewing playback pictures, those pictures show up in the view finder. I recharged the battery and tried again, same thing. For a while, I thought I would have to get a new camera.
I called Canon support (for the other reviewer, I found the number very easy to find, 1-800-828-4040.) After going through their voice prompts, I got a customer service person right away. No wait! Plus, the rep was in Virginia, so there weren't any of the typical issues that happen when customer support is located in India (like HP).
I described the problem, the rep helped me reset the camera, it worked for a few seconds. The rep told me to keep taking pictures for a few more seconds, because the fix may be temporary, and sure enough, the picture went blank again. (IMHO, most customer service departments would try to get me off the phone the second it started working again).
Long story short, there is a service advisory out on this camera, it turns out that the "image sensor" may malfunction. Canon is paying for the shipment back to them and they will fix it for free. No muss, no fuss. It didn't even matter that I had the camera for almost 4 years. This was one of the best customer service experiences I have ever had.
If your camera starts acting up like this, call Canon right away.
**update 1/12/08 ***
Canon was not able to fix my camera so they sent me a BRAND new one, a SD900 , a much much better camera. My camera was not under warranty anymore, but since it was the "image sensor" issue, Canon still covered it. Amazing customer service, very rare these days. They just earned a customer for life.

The Best Digital Camera For The Money
Nobody really wants, or needs the best of anything. It doesn't matter, whether it's digital cameras, automobiles, homes, or jet airplanes. What we really want and expect, is value for our money. If I'm going to spend $100 for a camera, then I better get $100 worth of features and quality from that camera. If I spend $1000 on a camera, then I better get $1000 worth back as well. If you follow a few simple rules, you'll see how easy it is to get the best camera your money can buy.
Acclaimed science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon was famous for a couple of adages known as Sturgeons Laws. My favorite, and the one most relevant to our discussion is, "Ninety percent of everything is crap." It's simple, direct and brutally honest. It also really helps narrow down our search. If the camera your looking at is not on at least one top ten list, then drop it from your search. If it doesn't have at least a four star review from someone, then drop if off your list. There are so many cameras to choose from these days, there's really no need to settle for anything less then the best.
The second step, and a little more effort intensive, is the trial run phase. You need to try out as many of the cameras on your now very short list (thanks to Theodore) as possible. Spend a day, and blitz your favorite camera stores. Go to two or three, and just annoy and pepper the sales staff with as many questions and requests as you can. If you go during off hours, you should have plenty of time and space to try out all the cameras you want. See if you can cajole them into letting you take a few home to try out. After this exercise, your short list should be really short. Maybe even a list of 1.
Of course if the above seems like to much work for you slackers out there, here's my short list of great cameras that are all money well spent. In the under $150 category, the Canon PowerShot A570IS. It's a simple point and shoot with 4x zoom lens, image stabilization, and Canon reliability. For the portability minded ultra compact FaceBook crowd, you can't go wrong with the Canon PowerShot SD1000 Digital Elph. Slightly less image quality then the A570IS, and slightly more expensive, but a very easy traveler. Another favorite compact of mine is the Olympus Stylus 790SW. The only waterproof, shockproof, dust proof, and freeze proof camera I know.
If want to head for the semi-pro class of camera, step up to the Canon Rebel XTi Digital SLR. It makes an easy transition from point and shoots into the infinitely complex world of SLR photography for about $600. And, finally for those of you with bottomless pocketbooks, why not splurge and grab yourself a Canon EOS 5D for about $2000 plus change. With full frame technology at a very reasonable price, your bound to silence even the most ardent "film only" purists anywhere.

So you are going to your kids sporting event and want to get some action shots or have a special event inside where your focal point is 30 to 50 feet away. You want to take a digital camera and still get good photos.
Many people want to take a point and shoot camera.

Look for the higher megapixel and a fast fps (frames per second). The more frames per second the better it should be in low light situations.
The Digital SLR cameras are by far the best for action, low light and generally incredible digital photos. Some of the drawbacks are that the cameras are larger. They replace the regular SLR cameras and are roughly the same size. You can purchase different lenses for these digital SLR cameras such as zoom and wide angle. There are hot shoes on these cameras so that you can buy and external flash for more light.
Keep in mind when taking sports shots you can look for one with a stabilizer which will give a good photo if y our hands are shaking from the excitement of the game or there is wind.
Make sure to turn on the turbo or burst and continual shot option is you are planning to shoot multiple shots in a row. Just depressing the shutter button will not produce multiple quick photos of actions unless you put any camera in that mode.

Considering I bought this camera solely because it had an optical viewfinder as well as the screen view, I have had my opinions of small cameras completely altered. The 5 Deadly Sins of Photoshop Composition
Photoshop is a wonderful program that allows you to edit a photograph in as many ways as you can imagine. It allows you to control every aspect of a photograph and gives you editing tools that a traditional photographer could only dream about. With this wide range of editing and compositing tools comes the ability to create fantastic works of art. With the rise in popularity of photography and personal computers, the door has been thrown open, now anyone with a half decent PC and a few spare dollars to buy PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS can and are calling themselves RETOUCHERS.
In the hands of a skilled user Photoshop can produce awe inspiring work; in the hands of a novice it can produce images of extremely poor quality. Unfortunately, as the popularity of the program grows and people become more and more exposed to these poor images, this lack of quality is becoming accepted as the norm.
Here are the things to watch for when creating Photoshop compositions:
1) Feathered edges. When you make a selection, using the dancing ants around an area you wish to move, change, color or otherwise edit, you have to feather the edge by at least 2-3 pixels (depending on the resolution of your image), in order to avoid the jagged edges we so often see in photo montages. Feathering creates a soft edge that blends the area of the selection with the area it abuts. Feathering an edge by a high value is also a useful way to fade out a selection.
2) Correct Perspective. If you have one element in an image that has a different geometrical perspective that does not match the rest of the image the whole image will look odd. A viewer will generally not know what is specifically wrong with the image, they will just know that it looks odd and generally undesirable. This is generally seen in buildings or cars that have been composited in from other images and not had their perspective adjusted to match the greater image as a whole. This would happen if two images shot at different focal lengths were then combined. An image from a 28mm lens combined with an image from a 200mm lens will need perspective adjustment to look right.
3) Correct Depth of Field. Images that have one object or area in focus and then behind that an object out of focus, and then behind that another object in focus will look very odd and be completely unbelievable. Like perspective, combining images shot with differing depth of field will require you to adjust the focus of the elements to correct the Depth of Field. One draw back, while it is possible to soften objects to make them appear out of focus or have short depth of field, it is next to impossible to sharpen soft objects to make them appear to be in focus. Depth of Field problems are one of the most common mistakes made in Photoshop compositions.
4) Direction of Light. When montaging images it is important to combine images shot with the same lighting conditions. The play of light on an object creates a series of shadows that have a specific directional play depending on where the light source was in relation to the object. If you montage together two images with differing light sources the image will look unreal and undesirable.
5) Color cast. All images have a color cast otherwise know as WHITE BALANCE, this is the HUE of the white areas. Also know as the color temperature of an image. Be careful to adjust the color cast of montaged images so that the white areas look the same, doing otherwise will render your images unreal and undesirable.
The human eye has an amazing ability to spot subtle changes in what it considers normal. Stare at a picture of a pink banana, after a short while the banana will start to appear yellow, but you will still have the feeling that something is not right. This also applies equally to Color, Focus, Perspective and Light Direction. When creating montage images in Photoshop it is important to watch for mistakes in these areas as you will want to have your images look as real as possible and thus as desirable or aesthetically pleasing as possible. I have seen far too many images used in big advertising campaigns with blatant disregard for these basic principles. Done right Photoshop can create compelling compositions; done wrong and it just looks, well... wrong!

Never Buy A Canon PowerShot SD750 Digital Elph Camera
Can you name at least three problems with the Canon PowerShot SD750 Digital Elph Camera? If you can't, then maybe you shouldn't even be considering buying one. I'm not suggesting, that the SD750 is a terrible camera, I'm just suggesting that you should know what your getting before you buy it. Knowing the flaws in a digital camera (even a Canon) before you buy is the key factor in your after purchase satisfaction. Let's consider some of the problems with the SD750 Digital Elph.
If your one of those consumers who is considering upgrading their PowerShot SD500 to a SD750 because of the large LCD screen, be careful. The SD750 has a 3 inch LCD screen. However, the big LCD is really not enough to make the upgrade worthwhile. While megapixels and image sensor are the same between the two cameras, the image quality is not. Images shot in less than ideal light using the flash turn out much more detailed on the SD500. Possibly due to slightly different lenses.
The technical definition for chromatic aberration (sometimes called purple fringing) is what happens, when a camera lens has problems focusing different wavelengths of light onto a common focal plane. In layman's terms, what you will see is a mild to extremely blurred picture. The PowerShot SD750 seems to have a bit too much chromatic aberration, especially shooting in wide angle mode with the aperture at it's maximum setting. Since this flaw is very specific to certain wavelengths (colors), you may or may not see this artifact in your images.
As with many cameras in this category, you'll notice a degradation in your ability to take more than one picture in rapid succession with the SD750. The prime culprits here are slow SD memory cards, and weak batteries. The flash, and the now larger LCD contribute to the problem. What can help, is buying the fastest speed memory cards you can, and quality batteries.
While this is not an exclusive list, a couple of other items to be concerned with are:
- no optical viewfinder
- a less than intuitive menu and control system
- an excessive number of features for a ultra compact, that you'll probably never use
- no manual exposure settings available
- short battery life
- zoom option not usable for shooting videos
Not to suggest you shouldn't buy the PowerShot SD750, just hoping your aware of what your getting into. All digital cameras have some flaws for certain people. What it really comes down to, is how you want to use the camera. I've generally found the the intended photographers particular shooting style is the single most important factor in making a new camera purchase.
