Digital Camera Buying Help - Comparing Canon PowerShot Models

As a hardcore amateur photographer, I must admit I fell in love with the Canon cameras and wouldn't switch to anther manufacturer for anything in the world. I noticed I'm not the only one with this fetish, as I visited Disney World I noticed that PowerShots were the most common cameras. So here is my list of favorite Canon cameras. Any of these are excellent choices.

1. SD1100IS

Equipped with a 8MP image sensor, this baby offers great image stabilization, longer zoom level (38-114 mm) and a better design. It comes in colors and can be great gifts.

2. SD870IS

This model is the one for you if you want a wider-angle lens. Except the lack of the viewfinder, making it rather impossible to use in a bright light, you will simply love all its facilities.

3. SD770IS

This is supposed to be an update of the SD1100IS model, costs $50-ish more and doesn't come in colors. Other than longer battery lifetime I couldn't see any difference to its predecessor, hence I rated it lower.

4. SD950IS

With a titanium body and a 12.1 MP sensor, this camera is simply gorgeous. An unique function that comes out of the box is the ability to put together panoramic images. I haven't rated it higher because it is a bit too pricey for the functionalities it offers.

5. SD890IS

This one is the most expensive in the PowerShot ELPH series. It comes with a 10MP sensor and a whopping 5x optical zoom. So if you need a camera with a long zoom lens, then this is definitely the one for you.

6. SD790IS

I like the SD770IS model better than this one. The 790IS comes with 3x zoom lens and 10 megapixel sensor, which is quite normal for a 2009 camera. The downside is the lack of an optical viewfinder. The only thing that makes this camera stand out is perhaps the 3" LCD display.

7. SD1000IS

This model has been replaced by SD1100IS, which is on the very top of my preferences. It doesn't come with image stabilization, which I would consider an important feature. It's quite a nice camera, that's why I put it in this favorites list, but no longer worth buying: if you like it, get its successor!

Getting the perfect Canon camera, is never an easy thing, especially with the way digital technology is constantly changing. Fortunately, there are plenty of helpful websites online, that can narrow down your search and help you find the camera with all the features important to you.

A Guide To Digital Camera Buying For Busy People

So, you need to buy a digital camera either for yourself or someone else. The problem is, you've never bought a digital before, and you don't have the time to get up to speed on all the pros and cons of digital cameras. Well, that sort of speeds the process up already, as we've just eliminated all the professional grade cameras and move to the category of hobbyist or casual photographer cameras.

That eliminates a lot of cameras, and narrows down the list of features we need to concern ourselves with. The first item we need to consider is budget. For simplicity sake, let's consider two categories. Under $200, and $200 to $500 cameras. After $500 we're getting into semi professional equipment, and going with our previous assumption that's neither you nor the lucky recipient of your purchase.

There's plenty of good cameras in the under $200 category, but I wouldn't venture below the $100 mark. Unless of course you like standing in customer service lines. The Canon PowerShot A720IS, or the Canon SD1000 Digital Elph are both respectable cameras. Backed by the solid Canon name, with plenty of megapixels, and some nice features like image stabilization, in camera editing and large sized LCD screens. The SD1000 is what's considered a ultra compact, so it's smaller and easier to stow in tight spaces.

In the over $200 category, you get more features, more megapizels, some extra accessories, and generally a more durable camera. Cameras to consider here would be the Canon PowerShot SD950IS or the Pro Series S5. The S5 has a nice 12X optical zoom for those times when want to be out of the scene but still want a close candid shot. Don't be shy about spending the extra money in this category, as I've generally found that cheap electronics always comes back to haunt you.

If that doesn't help, I keep a short list of recommended camera ratings and prices gathered from across the internet updated by the minute (aren't computers great). It's a great way to speed up the process, and eliminate all the less than stellar cameras. It's a fast and simple digital camera buying guide all on it's own.
